<p>I am Dr Karolina Pyziak-Kowalska, a specialist in infectious diseases based in Warsaw. My clinical practice covers infectious disease consultations, hepatology and travel medicine, with more than 20 years of experience working with patients presenting infections and infection-related conditions. Consultations are available in English, both in person at the clinic and online, for expatriates, diplomats, students and visitors to Warsaw who prefer to discuss their health in English.</p> <h2>When to see an infectious disease doctor</h2> <p>An infectious disease consultation is appropriate when a general practitioner has not identified the cause of symptoms, or when the situation involves a specific infection risk. Common reasons patients contact my office include:</p> <ul> <li>Fever without a clear explanation, including fever that persists after standard treatment</li> <li>Fever or illness developing after return from travel, particularly from tropical or subtropical regions</li> <li>A tick bite, or symptoms that may be related to a tick-borne disease such as Lyme disease or tick-borne encephalitis</li> <li>Concerns about a sexually transmitted infection, including situations requiring assessment for possible HIV exposure</li> <li>Chronic viral hepatitis (hepatitis B or C) requiring diagnosis, monitoring or referral for treatment</li> <li>A need for vaccination advice or vaccination as an adult, including before international travel</li> </ul> <p>Fever appearing within days or weeks of returning from the tropics is considered a situation that requires prompt medical assessment, since some possible causes, including malaria, can progress quickly.</p> <h2>What a consultation covers</h2> <p>A first infectious disease consultation typically includes a review of your symptoms and medical history, travel history where relevant, a physical examination, and a discussion of which laboratory tests or other investigations are appropriate. Depending on the findings, this may lead to a diagnosis, a treatment plan, a referral, or a period of monitoring. No Polish PESEL number is required to be seen; a passport or residence card is sufficient for registration.</p> <h2>Vaccinations for adults</h2> <p>Vaccinations, including those recommended before international travel, are administered on site after a medical qualification visit, so the consultation and the vaccination can generally take place on the same day. The clinic is a certified Travel Medicine Centre and an authorised yellow fever vaccination point, able to issue the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (the "yellow booklet") where required. Organisations such as the WHO and CDC generally recommend planning travel vaccinations several weeks before departure – WHO advises 4 to 8 weeks, CDC advises at least a month – to allow time for the vaccine to take effect and, where more than one dose is needed, to complete the schedule.</p> <h2>Children</h2> <p>Vaccinations are available for children of any age. Infectious disease and hepatology consultations are offered for children from the age of 6; younger children are referred to a paediatric infectious disease specialist.</p> <h2>Visiting from abroad</h2> <p>The clinic, ZnajomaKlinika, is located at ul. Stefana Żeromskiego 55/67, in the Bielany district of Warsaw, close to Żoliborz and within walking distance of the M1 metro line (Słodowiec and Stare Bielany stations). Office hours for in-person visits are Monday to Wednesday, 14:00–20:00, and Saturday, 9:30–15:30; online consultations can also be arranged. Reception staff speak English.
